Healthcare for plantation communities
In order to maintain high standards of health amongst plantation communities,healthcare centres located within Dilmah tea gardens continue to be equipped and upgraded. This covers basic medical facilities such as ante-natal and post-natal maternal care, immunisation, healtheducation, eye care and oral health.
In 2012, the Merrill J. Fernando Health Centre was established at the Somerset Estate in Talawakelle. Additionally an ECG machine was donated to the WesthallEstate Government Hospital in Nawalapitiya and the Houpe Estate Hospital was refurbished and upgraded with assistance from the Foundation.
TheMerrill J. Fernando Health Centre serves a serve a population of 3600 plantation workers and their families. The services include emergency care,ECG services, hemoglobin and blood sugar level testing, natal care, family planning, health education and an oral cancer and a TB control programme and equipped with an emergency ambulance service to handle swifttransfer of patients to Government Hospitals when required.
