Velipatanwila was the first Hambantota Fisher Community that the MJF Charitable Foundation sought to assist as the focus of Foundation activity evolved from Emergency assistance to Livelihood Rehabilitation. A meeting with the devastated fishermen in December, 2004 revealed that a centuries old tradition of fishing was at stake with boats, engines, nets and the fisher community centre lost to the tsunami
