The extraordinarily-abled shine at AIDEX 2012

AIDEX – Aid to the Ex-Abled – Annual Sports Day was held on Sunday the 7th October 2012 in Colombo. Held for the last 22 years, Aidex this year, coincided with the 180th anniversary of the Colombo Friend In Need Society (CFINS). Aidex is organised by the CFINS, specially for the Jaipur prosthetic limb users in Sri Lanka. Dilmah has been supporting Aidex since 2003.

The level of interest shown in being a part of the day’s event was heartening with over 400 entries being received from all parts of the country. 57 events were lined up for the day including archery, cycling and track and field events like putt shot, long jump and short-distance sprints. 116 men, 89 women and 17 children took part in the games. The participants include former servicemen who lost their limbs during the conflict.

Paralympic contestant Amara Indumathi as well as this year’s Paralympic bronze medal winner Sgt. Pradeep Sanjaya too competed in their respective events. Subhani Udeshika, has been competing in the AidEx sports day since 1998. She has participated in track events during Asian Paralympic meets held in Japan and Malaysia where she has won and recently completed the Graphics design course conducted by the Curtiss Design Centre at the MJF Centre in Moratuwa. She is now employed at the MJF Centre where she is working with differently abled children which she enjoys immensely. Speaking about Aidex Subhani stated,
“I am very happy that there is such a sports day as this is where my talent as an athlete was first discovered. It is also through Aidex that I met the MJF Charitable Foundation and I am very thankful for this”
