Colombo, 20th September 2005: Children of Kahawatte Plantations Tea Estate workers had a dream day out with the MJF Charitable Foundation and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Over 100 children were transported by the Foundation from the Kahawatte estates, to the capital city, Colombo to witness the first day of a Test Cricket match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Departing early on their four hour journey, the kids made it to the P. Sara Oval in time to witness a bonus event to their programme – a presentation ceremony for one of the greatest cricketers this country has produced, Sanath Jayasuriya, who was feted for having achieved the landmark of playing in 100 Test matches as well as being the first Sri Lankan to do so.

Much to the delight of the excited kids, Sri Lanka won the toss of the coin and decided to bat, and despite a flurry of early wickets including that of hero Jayasuriya, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Thilan Samaraweera proceeded to perform a rescue act for the home team and they certainly did it in some style. Both batsmen scored centuries and Sri Lanka nearly notched up 450 runs in a single day, the highest rate ever achieved by Sri Lanka which ofcourse spelt plenty of entertainment for the spectators and the kids from Kahawatte.

Sri Lanka Cricket certainly played their part in making this a memorable day for the kids by providing gratis a prime location for the kids to watch the game, which to their delight was right next to the Sri Lankan team’s room. The children enjoyed cups of Dilmah Tea throughout the day, as well as lunch, and were provided by the Foundation with a gift each of school books prior to their departure at the end of the day’s play.

The MJF Foundation promotes the exposure of isolated and severely deprived children to stimulation and enjoyment through events involving play and fun generally. The Foundation’s annual Pahan Tharuwa event promotes psychosocial stability through happiness. The children selected for the programme are from deprived homes. Most of the Kahawatte estate children had never had the opportunity of visiting Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.

The MJF Foundation funds several welfare projects on Kahawatte and other Dilmah affiliated Tea estates, including education scholarships, nutrition programmes for children and the elderly, the provision of crèche and medical facilities, the provision of emergency assistance via the Foundation’s Empathy Fund.
